Fractional engineering leadership for healthcare and regulated teams

Ship compliant healthcare software — without betting your runway on a full-time CTO.

Anova provides fractional engineering leadership for founder-led healthcare and regulated software teams entering the phase where every new feature touches sensitive data, every integration creates operational risk, and architecture, compliance, interoperability, and AI governance start to matter more than raw build speed.

We usually start with a 2-week fixed-fee sprint: Architecture & Sequencing Sprint.

30 minutes. You'll leave with a clear read on your top architecture and compliance risks — whether or not we end up working together.

I take on 1–2 new fractional engagements per quarter — currently booking for Q3 2026.Not ready to talk? Get the free Healthcare Architecture & AI-Governance Readiness Checklist

Services

Where senior engineering judgment reduces risk.

For teams shipping fast while PHI boundaries, AI behavior, interoperability, and architecture decisions start compounding faster than the roadmap.

Fractional Head of Engineering

Executive engineering capacity on retainer — architecture, AI governance, hiring, and delivery systems.

Regulated AI Engineering & Governance

Governed AI adoption with PHI boundaries, provenance, and human-in-the-loop review.

Architecture Modernization

Lead the modernization of systems that have outgrown their original architecture.

Healthcare Interoperability & Integration Leadership

Technical leadership across FHIR/EMR integration, clinical write-back, and CRM/scheduling/intake data flow.

Technical Due Diligence & Build-vs-Buy

Independent technical assessment and build-vs-buy guidance for founders and investors.

Founder-led delivery

Senior technical ownership from first call to launch.

I take pride in turning practical business ideas into working web products: clear pages, reliable workflows, integrations, hosting, and support that hold up after launch.

At Anova Technology, you work directly with a senior engineer who can translate business needs into the right technical plan, communicate tradeoffs, and keep the project moving without hiding behind layers of handoff.

How it works

A practical path from technical risk to sequence.

Start with fit, turn uncertainty into a prioritized architecture and compliance plan, then only expand into ongoing leadership when the leverage is clear.

Fit review

A 30-minute risk read before any engagement — the business context, technical situation, and what makes this the right moment for engineering leadership.

Architecture & sequencing sprint

A two-week fixed-fee engagement that produces a prioritized technical sequence — what to change, in what order, and why — before any retainer begins.

Engineering leadership

As fractional Head of Engineering, Anova owns the technical decisions and the systems that make the team effective — architecture, governance, hiring, and delivery cadence.

Governance & leverage

We keep the architecture, governance, and team healthy over time, and provide independent due diligence when major decisions are on the table.

Engagement model

Start with a concrete sprint, not an open-ended retainer.

The usual entry point is a 2-week fixed-fee sprint: Architecture & Sequencing Sprint. It gives you a prioritized technical and compliance sequence before any larger Fractional Head of Engineering commitment.

Why Anova

Trusted judgment, not testimonials.

Anova is led by Allen Lee — ~15 years in regulated healthcare and life-sciences software, including Director of Engineering at Adaptive Innovations (healthcare operations), eight years at Medidata Solutions on clinical-trial systems, and regulated medical-device software at LinusBio — with cross-industry range at Google and EA. The proof is the record and the references, not manufactured quotes.

FAQS

Questions buyers usually ask before starting.

It is executive engineering leadership on a fractional basis — the judgment, architecture, AI governance, hiring, and delivery systems a team would get from a Head of Engineering or CTO, without the cost or commitment of a full-time hire. Anova owns the important technical decisions and the systems that make a team effective, not a fixed list of tasks.

Anova is an engineering-leadership firm, so the work is judgment, architecture, governance, and delivery systems first. We go hands-on where it has the most leverage — proving out an architecture, setting patterns, or unblocking a critical path — but the engagement is not sold as build hours or headcount.

By the decisions and systems that multiply a team rather than the hours logged. The right architecture choice, a governed AI rollout, a hire that raises the bar, or a delivery system that removes recurring friction is worth far more than any single feature. Leverage over effort is the operating principle.

Yes — regulated and healthcare teams are the core focus. Anova treats PHI boundaries, provenance, auditability, and human-in-the-loop review as design inputs, especially when adopting AI inside regulated workflows. Please do not send PHI or patient details through the contact form; we will set up an appropriate channel during the engagement.

The Architecture & Sequencing Sprint is a fixed fee for two weeks. The Fractional Head of Engineering retainer is monthly, with reserved hours and a three-month minimum. Technical Due Diligence is scoped per engagement, and Regulated AI Engineering & Governance is delivered inside a retainer rather than priced separately. Figures are shared in a fit review, once the scope is clear enough for the number to mean something.

Most engagements start with the sprint. It is a standalone engagement rather than a deposit, so the fee is not credited against a later retainer — you leave with a roadmap you own whether or not we continue.

Anova works with a small number of teams at a time so each gets real executive attention. We are deliberate about conflicts and will flag any concern before an engagement begins. The fit review is where we confirm there is no conflict and that the capacity is there to do the work well.

Founder-led healthcare and regulated software teams entering the phase where architecture, compliance, interoperability, and AI governance start to matter more than raw build speed — teams that need executive engineering judgment but are not ready for, or do not need, a full-time CTO.

You share the business context, the technical situation, and what is at stake. In 30 minutes, Anova gives you a clear read on the top architecture and compliance risks, confirms fit and conflicts, then recommends the right next step.

When there is fit, that next step is usually a 2-week fixed-fee sprint: Architecture & Sequencing Sprint. When there is not, you still leave with an honest recommendation.
